Deputy Chief of Police Sanchez is a 26-year veteran
with the Santa Monica Police Department. He is the
first executive to serve as the Deputy Chief of
Police in the Department’s history. He has held a
variety of commands throughout his distinguished
career, including the Office of Operations, the
Office of Criminal Investigations, the Office of
Administrative Services, and has commanded the
Internal Affairs Division. Deputy Chief Sanchez has
an extensive background in tactics and special
operations. In 1991, he developed the Santa Monica
Police Department’s Special Entry Team (SWAT), which
is highly respected throughout the law enforcement
community. Deputy Chief Sanchez is also recognized
as an expert in police tactics and has authored
several articles, which have been published in
police periodicals. The topics of his writings
include, The Physiological Effects of Stress in
Lethal Environments and Critical Incident Memory
Loss – Investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting.
Deputy Chief Sanchez also participates on
several committees, at the local and regional level,
working to address homelessness.

Deputy Chief Sanchez has his Bachelor’s degree in
Management from the University of Redlands and is a
graduate of both the FBI National Academy and POST
Command College for Executive Leadership, where he
received top honors including special recognition as
the most inspirational leader of his class. He has
twice been awarded the Department’s Medal of Courage
for heroic actions during tactical operations. He
was also awarded the Department’s Medal of Merit and
has numerous commendations. Deputy Chief Sanchez is
involved in the Santa Monica community and is active
in several local based, nonprofit organizations. He
is a member of several professional law enforcement
organizations, including The Command College Alumni
Association, FBI National Academy Association,
National Tactical Officers Association and the
Hispanic American Police Command Officers
Association. He is also an adjunct instructor at the
Orange County Sheriff’s Academy.
