Deputy Chief Alfonso Venegas joined the Santa Monica Police Department in 1988 upon his graduation from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Police Academy. Prior to joining the department, Deputy Chief Venegas served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He has extensive experience in field operations including the Crime Impact Team, the Metro Anti-Crime Unit, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), and K9 operations.
Deputy Chief Venegas was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1997 and worked uniform patrol, supervised the Crime Impact Team, Metro Team, and was an Internal Affairs Investigator. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant in 2002, Deputy Chief Venegas was assigned as a Watch Commander. He also worked as the Operations Executive Officer, Directed Resources Division Commander, and served as the Internal Affairs Division Commander. Promoted to Captain in 2007, Deputy Chief Venegas commanded the Special Enforcement Division, and the Operations Division. During this time period, Deputy Chief Venegas worked extensively with non-profit organizations, homeless service providers, and in collaboration with other city and county departments in furtherance of the City’s efforts to reduce homelessness. Deputy Chief Venegas worked with the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) in developing training for law enforcement’s response to the Mentally Ill and Returning Iraq War Veterans. Deputy Chief Venegas was promoted to his current rank in 2011 and currently commands the Administrative Services Division. Deputy Chief Venegas is responsible for the day to day operations of the Police Department.
Deputy Chief Venegas holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from Mount Saint Mary’s College and a Master’s Degree in Sociology and Criminology from the University of California at Irvine. He is a graduate of the POST Command College Class #38 and the FBI National Academy Session #234. Deputy Chief Venegas is the recipient of the Department’s Medals of Valor, Courage, Lifesaving, and has received numerous citations for exemplary service. Deputy Chief Venegas has served on a number of social service organizations, including The American Diabetes Association and Step Up on Second. Additionally, he serves as an area expert to POST on Homelessness and Returning Military Reservists to Law Enforcement.
