    Citizen Academy

citizen_academyThe Citizen Academy is a free, 10-12 week program designed to give you an inside look at local law enforcement, including an overview of the Santa Monica Police Department’s functions, responsibilities and operational procedures.

The Academy class meets one evening per week for a three-hour session. The majority of the classes are held at the Public Safety Facility.  Classes consist of lectures, discussions, and demonstrations and are taught by police executives, civilian employees, and police officers.  Participants will meet the Chief of Police, and learn about community policing, criminal investigations, forensics, and the effects of driving under the influence.

Some of the activities you will participate in through the Citizen Academy may include mock traffic stops and a ride-along with a patrol officer.  In addition, you will watch demonstrations by the SWAT Team, and take a tour of the Santa Monica Bay with our Harbor Unit.  The course concludes with a graduation ceremony; the participants receive a certificate of completion.
