Each month, the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit focuses on different driving behaviors that are primary causation factors for traffic collisions. In May, the Traffic Enforcement Unit will focus on unsafe speed violations.
The California Vehicle Code - Section 22350 Laws Applicable to Basic Speed Law:
No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.
Santa Monica PD Captain Carolin Larson wants to remind everyone that while the posted sign will state the speed limit, the conditions for the road may warrant a lower speed. For example, when it is raining or foggy, a driver may need to drive slower than the posted speed limit to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the roadway. Practicing safe driving for the present conditions is key.
