The Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Section will focus on different driving behaviors each month that are primary causation for traffic collisions. In July, motor officers will look for vehicles following too closely to other vehicles.
The California Vehicle Code - Section 21703 Laws Applicable to Following Too Closely:
21703. The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon, and the condition of, the roadway.
Santa Monica Police Traffic Investigator Chris Dawson wants to remind everyone that following too closely or “Tailgating” is a serious concern. When a vehicle in front stops, the vehicle that is tailgating will not have time to stop. The main contributors for traffic collisions as a result of following too closely are inattention or being in a hurry.
The Santa Monica Police Department asks that you allow yourself some extra time when you prepare to go somewhere and be cognizant of the vehicle in front of you.
