In three recent cases reported to the Santa Monica Police Department, unsuspecting victims received a telephone call from a person on the other end who identifies himself as a law enforcement agent. The scammer told the victim that (s)/he has an outstanding warrant for a red light or traffic related violation which would lead to an immediate arrest unless paid over the telephone. The suspect demands that the victim obtain a Green Dot prepaid debit card in the amount of $1,500.00 and use the card as instrument for payment.

The Santa Monica Police Department would like to remind residents that law enforcement agencies will never call asking for money to clear a warrant.  Anyone who receives a warrant payment call or a similar suspicious call demanding urgent payment should report it immediately by calling the Santa Monica Police Department non-emergency number at 310-458-8491.

Anyone with information about the scam is also urged to contact the Police Department.
