What is the Citizen
Police Academy?
The Santa Monica Police
Department is pleased to provide the
community with an inside look at local law
enforcement. The 10-12 week Citizen Police Academy
is designed to give you an overview of the
Santa Monica Police Department’s functions,
responsibilities, and operational
procedures.
Classes are taught by police
executives, staff members and veteran police
officers. Participants will also meet with
the Chief of Police. The classes consist of
lecture, discussion, demonstrations and
interactive exercises.
Classes include topics such
as: Community Policing, Criminal
Investigations, History of the Santa Monica
Police Department, Evidence
Collection/Forensics, and Driving Under the
Influence.
Activities and demonstrations
include a mock crime scene, an interactive
video firearms simulation, “ride-along”
with an officer on patrol, self defense and
a Special Entry Team demonstration.
The Academy meets once a week
for a three-hour evening session during the
12 weeks at our Police Headquarters located
in the new Public Safety Facility. There is
one Saturday class which includes a tour of
our Harbor Unit located at the Santa Monica
Pier.
There is no charge for
attending the Academy. Students are only
responsible for taking turns bringing
refreshments after the first night of class.
