  Community Relations Unit

The Community Relations Unit was created to help the local community, both residents and businesses, keep themselves from becoming victimized by a crime.  In addition to the prevention advice listed on our safety tips page, Community Relations offers a number of free programs for the community.  These include security surveys, the popular Neighborhood Watch Program, and crime prevention presentations for businesses, schools, and civic groups.  The Community Relations Unit also puts on a Citizen Academy which offers people who reside or work in Santa Monica an inside look at the workings of the Santa Monica Police Department during a 12-week course.

Do you want to start a Neighborhood Watch group? We can help. Contact the Community Relations Unit at 310-458-8474.

Would you like an insider’s look at the operation of the Santa Monica Police Department? Maybe you should participate in the Citizen Academy!

Residential / Community Programs

Community E-mail Subscription Program
Through the Santa Monica Police Department's Community E-mail Subscription Program, Santa Monica residents, organizations, business owners, managers and employees receive important information on crime trends, crime prevention techniques and Santa Monica Police Department crime bulletins.  The information is e-mailed periodically by the Santa Monica Police Department's Community Relations Unit.  Any resident, business or organization with an e-mail address is eligible to become a subscriber.  Business subscribers are encouraged to photocopy the bulletins and distribute them to employees and neighboring businesses without internet access.

To subscribe to the Santa Monica Police Department's Community E-mail Subscription Program, call (310) 458-8474 or submit an online request.

Residential Security Surveys
A Crime Prevention Coordinator will come to your home or apartment to conduct a residential security survey at no cost. Areas covered include lighting, landscaping, locks, alarms, and much more. The Crime Prevention Coordinator can then offer valuable suggestions on how to decrease your chances of becoming a victim of burglary or robbery. Schedule your survey today by calling 310-458-8474.

Senior Adult Identification Registry
The Senior Adult Identification Registry program is a service to help provide greater peace of mind to our City’s senior citizens, their families and caregivers. Personal Identification Registry Form may be found online.

Operation Identification
Through Operations Identification, owners engrave their California driver’s license or I.D. number on their valuable property. In addition to deterring theft, this program also helps law enforcement personnel locate the owner of recovered stolen property. The Santa Monica Police Department lends electric engravers to the public free of charge. To reserve an engraver to mark your property, call 310-458-8474.

Station Tours
Tours of the Santa Monica Public Safety Building are available for school and other community groups. To schedule a tour, please call 310-458-8474.
