On Friday, March 2,
2001 at approximately 1:00 p.m., after a long term and intensive
investigation, two suspended Santa Monica Police Officers surrendered
to the court in connection with conspiracy to defraud the City of
Santa Monica through Workers Compensation benefits. The suspended
officers were identified as Gabe Surez, 40, a 12-year veteran, and
Jason Comer, 32, a six-year veteran.
The investigation was
based on information developed by the Santa Monica Police Department’s
Internal Criminal Unit. The Santa Monica Police Department worked in
conjunction with the State Department of Insurance and the Los Angeles
County District Attorney’s Office to bring this investigation to a
felony filing status.
Both officers
surrendered to the court on charges of Workers Compensation fraud,
grand theft, perjury, money laundering and conspiracy.
