On April 9, 2001 at
approximately 7:07 a.m., Santa Monica police officers responded to a
call of shots fired at the Airborne Express office located in the 1700
block of east Nebraska.
An employee, later
identified as Ronald Brown, Male, 34, of Hawthorne, came to work armed
with a 4" nickel plated .357 magnum revolver. He entered
the location through the rear, pointed the firearm at several
employees and discharged 4 or 5 rounds at random. The employees
in the building fled out the front with the suspect behind them.
The suspect exited the front and then discharged an additional round
through the front plate glass window. He then proceeded east on
Nebraska.
Santa Monica Police
Officers were almost immediately on scene and confronted the still
armed suspect, ordering him to drop his weapon and surrender.
The suspect did not do as instructed and turned towards the
officers. Two shots were fired by one of the officers, one of
which struck the suspect in the leg. The suspect was taken into
custody and the revolver was recovered. The suspect was
transported to a local hospital. After treatment he was booked
at the Santa Monica Police Department for attempt murder and
transported to the Los Angeles County Jail Medical Ward. His
bail is $500,000.00.
The investigation is
ongoing. At this time there is no known motive for his behavior.
