The
Santa Monica Police Department’s celebration of National Night Out
Against Crime-- which has won national awards for the last six years--
will take place on
Tuesday, August 7 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m on the City’s famed Third
Street Promenade.
All
citizens interested in joining this year’s symbolic parade against
crime and drugs should come to the staging area at the corner of the
Third Street Promenade and Wilshire Boulevard, by 6:30 p.m. The first
750 to register will receive free buttons, balloons, and flashlights.
Entertainment will include the Santa Monica Sweet Adeline
Chorus and the Santa Monica High School marching band.
Sponsored
for the last 18 years by the National Association of Town Watch,
National Night Out is a nationwide event in which over 9,600
communities and 32 million people are expected to participate.
The whole local
event will be videotaped and photographed
by CityTV for prize consideration in this year’s national
competition.
Last
year there were over 1,500 marchers, setting a record for the local
event. “ With the help of our local citizens,”
S.M.P.D. Chief James Butts
said, “I have every hope that Santa Monica will set a new record for
this most important march against crime.”
The
parade will end in Palisades Park (Ocean Avenue at Broadway) and will
include free food from Trader Joe’s, 7 Eleven and El Cholo
restaurant. There will also be music by DJ Tony Harris, dance and
karate demonstrations, face painting and goodie bags for kids.
In addition, State Assembly member Fran Pavley will be present
to host a Kid Print booth which will offer parents an opportunity to
have their children’s fingerprints placed on a card to take home for
safekeeping among their own family records.
