TERRORIST ATTACK UPDATES

September 11, 2001 - 9:00 a.m. PST

SITUATION SUMMARY
As I'm sure you're all aware, just before 9:am eastern standard time, an airliner struck one of the World Trade Center towers in New York. Approximately 18 minutes later a second airliner was flown into the second WTC tower. Within a half an hour, it is reported that a plane crash landed in the vicinity of the Pentagon and just before 11am EST still another domestic aircraft crash landed in Pittsburgh. Casualties are anticipated to be in the thousands.

These incidents have been reported and are believed by government officials to be acts of coordinated terrorism. The FAA has closed airports countrywide and an attempt to account for all aircraft still airborne is under way.

IMPACT ON SANTA MONICA
We have received no intelligence to indicate that any buildings in Santa Monica would be targets of this activity. Regardless, we have held over our Morning Watch personnel and will evaluate the need to institute a Police tactical alert as events unfold. Our intelligence officers are in constant contact with sources in the intelligence community to receive updated information. Los Angeles County has activated their Emergency Operations Center and we will be in periodic contact with them throughout the day.

Santa Monica schools are in session. The Santa Monica Airport is closed. Should there be any significant change in Police status or threat assessment for the City you will be informed by my office.

JAMES T. BUTTS, JR.
CHIEF OF POLICE
