On
October 1, 2001, at 8:45 P.M., Santa Monica Police received a call of
a suspicious package in the area of 600 block of Pacific Coast
Highway. When officers
arrived, they contacted the reporting party who said that they
received a package in the mail containing an unknown material.
The
package was determined to be a hoax and was an attempt to look as the
“Klingerman virus.” The “Klingerman virus” is a known hoax and
has been in existence on the Internet since 1999.
There have been no known confirmations of such a virus, and
there have been no known deaths attributed to this hoax.
The
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently received
several inquiries concerning the “Klingerman virus.”
The CDC has stated, “There
is no Klingerman virus, and the information in the e-mail is untrue.”
The
investigation is being handled by the Santa Monica Police Department,
Office of Criminal Investigation.
