On
November 30, 2001, the Santa Monica Police Department conducted a
Driver’s License/DUI checkpoint, in the 600 block of Santa Monica
Boulevard in accordance with a State of California - Office of Traffic
Safety (OTS) Grant. The
OTS grant entitled “RID” removing irresponsible drivers is
designed to remove unlicensed drivers from the roadways.
The
Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Division issued citations
and towed several vehicles for a variety of offenses.
Two individuals were arrested, one for driving under the
influence and the other for giving false information to a police
officer. A total of 606
vehicles were stopped in a four-hour period.
Representatives from the Southern California Chapter of MADD
were in attendance during the checkpoint.
The
goal of these programs aim at educating and bringing awareness to our
community, while at the same time detecting and removing drunk and
irresponsible drivers from our roadways.
