The Third Street
Promenade Bicycle Unit is comprised of one
Police Sergeant, six Police Officers and
eleven Community Service Officers. The unit
began deploying on bicycles in 1990, when
the Downtown became too congested to make
patrolling in vehicles effective. This
change in tactics allowed officers to use a
combination of speed and stealth in their
patrol strategy. Patrolling on bikes also
allows officers to maintain close contact
with citizens, enhancing the public’s
perception of safety.
The Third Street
Promenade Bicycle Unit is located in Parking
Structure 6, 1433 2nd Street. The
substation is open to the public from 9:00
a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week.

BICYCLE PATROL
OFFICERS
The Santa Monica Police Department deploys
bicycle officers in the downtown area,
including the Third Street Promenade, 7 days
a week, 365 days a year. Our goal is to make
the Bayside District as safe and popular as
possible. We accomplish this by using
bicycles as our primary means of
transportation. Using bikes allows us to
respond to calls much faster than we can on
foot.
In choosing officers
for this much sought after position, a
priority is placed on people who are in very
good physical condition, enjoy interacting
with citizens and are highly self-motivated.
The Third Street Bicycle Officers take great
pride in helping make the Promenade a great
place to bring the whole family! |
