    Traffic Enforcement Unit

The Traffic Enforcement Unit is committed to the goal of reducing traffic collisions through law enforcement, education, and engineering. We participate in weekly targeted enforcement operations to enhance traffic safety, including identification and deterrence of aggressive driving, bike and pedestrian safety operations, and DUI enforcement. Some of these safety operations are grant-funded made possible by the State of California's Office of Traffic Safety.

In keeping with the Department's goal of addressing bicycle, pedestrian, and motorist safety, this unit makes use of press releases to local media as well as social media communications, including Facebook and Twitter, to provide education and information about SMPD's safety enforcement operations.  We also work closely with City staff and an array of community partners to determine how traffic flow can be enhanced while increasing safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
